The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) provides reasonable accommodations to assure equal access to individuals with disabilities.
A “reasonable accommodation” is a change, modification, alteration or adaption in policy, procedure, program or facility that provides a qualified person with a disability the opportunity to participate in and benefit from SDHC programs and activities.
If you ask for a reasonable accommodation, SDHC will request that you complete a form to verify your status as a person with a disability. The type of verification you will need to provide depends on the specifics of your situation.
Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis because individuals with the same disability may not need or want the same level of accommodation.
You may qualify for a reasonable accommodation if you meet at least one of three qualifying definitions under the Americans with Disabilities Act:
- A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the person’s major life activities;
- A record of such impairment; or
- Regarded as having such an impairment
Once your status as a person with a disability is confirmed, you are required to have a health care professional fill out one of the Reasonable Accommodation Request forms listed below, depending on the nature of your request.
The forms explain what exceptions are necessary to accommodate a person with a disability.
SDHC will issue a written decision. If you qualify for the accommodation and it does not create an undue administrative or financial burden, SDHC will attempt to grant the request or offer an alternate accommodation that will meet your needs.
If SDHC denies your request, you have a right to request an informal review of the decision.
