U.S. Navy Veteran Appointed to San Diego Housing Commission Board, Commissioner Melinda K. Vásquez Reappointed to Second Term

SAN DIEGO, CA — The San Diego City Council this week confirmed Mayor Todd Gloria’s appointment of Antoine “Tony” Jackson, a U.S. Navy Veteran who works in business development, to the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) Board of Commissioners, along with the reappointment of attorney Melinda K. Vásquez to her second term.

Mr. Jackson has been appointed to one of two seats on the SDHC Board of Commissioners that the City of San Diego’s Municipal Code requires to be held by residents living in SDHC affordable housing units or recipients of federal rental assistance from SDHC.

“As a military veteran and rental assistance participant, Mr. Jackson will be an important voice of additional leadership and unique insight on the Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Vásquez’s acumen in the areas of housing and homelessness will continue to be an asset to the Board. I am sincerely excited to have both of their voices and perspectives in the discussions as the San Diego Housing Commission continues to implement innovative approaches to address the housing and homelessness challenges in our city,” SDHC Chair of the Board Eugene “Mitch” Mitchell said.

Mr. Jackson works as a Business Development and Inside Sales Manager for a company that provides realistic training exercises for military, law enforcement and first responders. His professional experience also includes service as Vice President of Sales and Business Development of a medical software company and Business Development Manager for a technical solutions company.

Commissioner Vásquez has been an attorney since 2015. She practices in real estate, labor and family law.

Her volunteer experience includes serving on the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls for San Diego County and as a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) for children in the foster care system with nonprofit organization Voices for Children. She is a former member of the Rancho Peñasquitos Planning Board and served on the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council, including as Board President and Vice President.

The SDHC Board of Commissioners reviews proposed changes to housing policy, property acquisitions, other financial commitments, and agency operations, including allocation of resources, revisions to personnel policies and annual administrative and operating budgets. The Board’s actions are advisory to the Housing Authority of the City of San Diego, which is composed of the nine members of the San Diego City Council.

The Board offers policy guidance to SDHC staff through its communications with SDHC President and Chief Executive Officer. The Board’s seven members are appointed by the Mayor of San Diego and confirmed by the City Council.

Mr. Jackson was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the SDHC Board of Commissioners, previously held by Margaret “Maggi” Davis. The term ends January 2, 2024.

Commissioner Vásquez’s term will end January 2, 2027.
