HUD High Performing Agency
There is a nationwide movement to focus new housing development in so-called urban in-fill areas located near mass transit facilities. Transit-oriented development, also known as “Smart Growth”, typically features mixed-use zoning that allows for multifamily housing structures with bottom-floor retail, pedestrian friendly walkways and access to trains, trolleys or buses.
On October 14, 2011 the Housing Commission adopted a three-year work plan to facilitate transit-oriented affordable housing developments for workforce families and seniors.
The San Diego Housing Commission is working in collaboration with the city of San Diego and the San Diego Association of Governments on a Sustainable Communities Plan to identify potential affordable housing sites that would fit the Smart Growth concept.
The San Diego Association of Governments, which is coordinating the region’s transit-oriented development, has $280 million in Transnet funding that will be awarded to competitive projects over the next four years.
