HUD High Performing Agency
The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) Board of Commissioners is composed of seven members, each appointed by the mayor of San Diego and confirmed by the City Council. If the mayor does not appoint a member within 45 days of a vacancy, the City Council appoints someone to fill the seat. Two of the Board’s seats are reserved for residents of agency-owned housing units, including one who must be 62 years or older.
As an independent overseer of SDHC, the Board reviews proposed changes to housing policy, property acquisitions and other financial commitments. The Board offers policy guidance to SDHC staff through its communications with the agency’s Chief Executive Officer. The Board’s actions are advisory to the Housing Authority of the City of San Diego, which is composed of the nine members of the City Council.
The SDHC Board of Commissioners also reviews changes to the agency’s operations, including allocation of resources, revisions to personnel policies and annual administrative and operating budgets.
SDHC Commissioners who are residents of the agency’s affordable housing serve for terms of two years, or until a replacement is appointed. The five remaining SDHC Board members serve terms of four years, or until a replacement is appointed.
